Don’t Give Up
Imagine what it was like to be Simon Peter as he came to meet, then know and discipleunder the Messiah. Israel had long awaited their Menachem, or “the one who consoles.”Peter and Andrew were ardent followers of John the Baptizer, and very eager to shifttheir allegiance to the one whom John the Baptist acknowledged as the Christ. For threeyears Peter followed our Lord, listening to His words, seeing the miracles, and waitingfor the Kingdom. Then things began to change.Jesus began to insist on His equality with God and many began to leave. The scenearound Him became hostile. One day Peter found himself, with the other eleven, in anupper room listening about impending death and seeming defeat! He wouldn’t have it!But we read that in that very room, Jesus told Peter that he would deny Him…and hedid! To his trepidation, Peter is then a witness to the horrific scourging and crucifixion ofChrist. Three days later he sees the risen Savior and we go to the next event found inJohn 21:1.We are told that Jesus appeared again to His disciples by the Sea of Galilee. Seven ofthe eleven remaining disciples were there on the shore with Peter, Thomas, Nathaniel, sons of Zebedee and two other disciples not named. Peter turned to all of them andsaid, “I’m going out to fish.” (NIV) In the language Peter used, there is finality to it. Hisstatement was in the present infinitive tense—translated, “I’m going back to being afisherman.” That puts a slightly different spin on this text. This wasn’t a casual, “Heythere’s nothing to do today, let’s go catch a few fish.” This wasn’t, “Let’s go shoot somebaskets” or “Hey, let’s take a hike; let’s go out for awhile and get some fresh air.” Thiswas Peter; most likely still stinging from the fact that he had denied Jesus, being verydeliberate. Seven of the eleven were sitting there wondering what’s next. Peter said, “Idon’t know about the rest of you… but I’m going back to being a fisherman!” and the restsaid they would go with him—so they went out and got into the boat. The language used there (“the boat”) indicates that there was a familiarity to that itembeing discussed. It basically meant, the old standby, familiar boat—the one he alwayshad, the one that he had left on at least two other occasions in the aorist tense; a once
